For years, I remember seeing Emily Giffin’s books at Target. They had the cute covers, but I’d never heard anyone talk about them… and I don’t usually read series books. Maybe I’m a book snob, but there’s a lot of chick lit out there that I just don’t subscribe to.
Little did I know that I was TOTALLY missing out on one of the best authors out there. Last summer, I started reading her books and started with Something Borrowed… and then Something Blue and then quickly devoured every book that she’s written.
Over the summer, she quickly became one of my favorite authors. And, I found out that she was also a favorite of just about everyone I know! If you haven’t read her books yet, I HIGHLY recommend them.
I definitely recommend getting started with Something Borrowed. Those characters are just AMAZING. Darcy and Rachel and Dex…. what a crew. I love Darcy’s selfish ways and how kind-hearted Rachel is. Their story carries over to Something Blue, and these are the two books that made me love this author. Read them and take your time. You’ll be sad when they’re over. Yes, they’re that good.
This month, Emily Giffin also released a free eBook that’s a prequel to Something Borrowed. that gives us visibility into Darcy and Rachel’s high school days. Even better, it’s a FREE eBook download. Click on the book below to get the link to Google books for the free download.
It’s not often that I find a free eBook that I’m excited to read… but this book had me hooked! It’s a short diary (not surprising, when we consider that the author is Darcy!)
What I loved about this eBook is that it gives us the back-story on some of our favorite characters… it digs deeper into who Darcy is and exposes us to her youthful ways. As portrayed in Something Borrowed, Darcy is a bright, extravagant, and self-centered character…. and interestingly Giffin makes you love her. How often do you refer to someone who is self-centered as lovable? It’s really the way Giffin builds the story… you find her endearing. You want her to behave better, but in the end, you love her for who she is.
Darcy as a high schooler is just as you would expect. Her partner-in-crime Rachel is ever her opposite and focuses on school… while Darcy focuses on dating all the cutest boys in school. Just as I envisioned in Something Borrowed, Darcy’s diary confirms that Rachel was along for the ride in many of Darcy’s escapades. I also enjoyed that the book dives deeper into some of the fun moments from Something Borrowed/Blue: We hear firsthand about Darcy’s Notre Dame application and we’re introduced to Ethan and his role he played with the girls from very early on.
Overall, this is a super-quick read and one I highly recommend. Giffin also gives us a sneak peak at her latest release Where We Belong.
