So… let me tell you a little story about the book I just finished – Gone Girl. I heard about it months ago and had asked some of my avid reader friends.
Is this a book I can handle?
Afterall, I read fluff and chick lit. You know, stories of rainbows and butterflies.
I’m single and hear noises in the night.
Should this really be something I’m reading?
Deb likes suspenseful books and was one of the first to report reading it last year. LaDawn read it, too. But then I started hearing that Natalie had read it… and then Tiffany had read it. ALL of them recommending it…
I mean, I suppose I felt I needed to read this freakin’ book. There must be something to it, with everyone talking about it… yet not really saying much at all about it. Hmmm….
Like an innocent box of Cheez-Its, I devoured the book in like two days. It was a VERY small time investment because I couldn’t get it out of my hands. I had a migraine on Monday, and as soon as it faded… my nose was right back in the book. Unbelievable. It’s been a while since I’ve read something that had this kind of effect on me.
If you are looking for a pageturner, I believe you’ve found it.
Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn
The story kicks off in New York City, where our main characters fall in love. Both Nick and Amy strike me as likable characters from the get-go. I enjoy the banter they offer, as the author switches off between the two characters each chapter. I love when writers give me a chance to hear each characters’ voice. Elin Hilderbrand does this as well in her novels.
Our happy couple moves to Missouri where their relationship grows stale. In a boring little town along the Mississippi, they find their relationship to be in a rut yet make plans to celebrate their fifth anniversary.
That’s when the story lets loose… when the wife disappears.
Now, this is the part where I pause. There is SO MUCH about this book that I want to write about. Gillian Flynn does an AMAZING job spinning this scandalous web… like none other I’ve ever read. The twists, the turns, the audible gasps you would have heard from my mouth. She got me. She stunned me, and she’s had me thinking about this book for TWO DAYS.
I even hear that they are making this book into a movie. I cannot even imagine that! I mean, it’s written perfectly for film adaptation, but I can’t imagine seeing this book on the big screen O-M-G!
If you enjoy thrillers, suspense, or psychological mysteries that boggle your brain… this is your book. I’ve even heard that Flynn’s other books are just as good, if not better but I need a break from this kind of drama. Eventually, I’ll pick up Sharp Objects, but for now I’m still trying to figure out that crazy Amy…
Have you read Gone Girl? ** Warning: There may be spoilers below in the comments!! **
[…] After reading Gone Girl a few weeks back (still gasping from how awesome it was!), I decided to go back to my usual reading style of happier, fluffier novels… and I chose Elin Hilderbrand’s novel The Beach Club this weekend. […]
