Creating a Fabulously “Uncommon” Holiday Gift List

The holidays are  JUST around the corner.  Just FORTY days away!  Can you even believe it??

Aside from needing to decorate my house, finish my Christmas shopping, and ship presents… it’s also that time of year when I start digging around to find out what friends and family want for Christmas.  I’ve done better this year than in most, but I still have a few names on my gift list that I’m struggling to buy for.

I first heard about Uncommon Goods from my friend Jen years ago… when we were still roommates.  Jen used to get their catalogs, and we’d always talk about all the things we wanted.  Since their gifts are unique and often handmade, it was like nothing we had seen in stores… and always on our wish list!  When Uncommon Goods reached out to have me review their holiday wish book, I couldn’t resist previewing a few items… and giving you guys my picks for some of those hard-to-buy for friends and family members.

Uncommon Goods | No Thanks to Cake

The site truly has the cutest gifts… and something for everyone.  Not only do they have cute personalized items and gifts to hang by the chimney with care, but they also have the best ideas for under the tree!

Now, truth be told, I debated sharing presents I’d purchased for friends and family… but many of them read NTTC and it would spoil the surprise.   So, if you think these gifts are for you, friends, they’re not!  I’ve got other ideas for you… Just you wait!

For Your Favorite Knitter

As a yarn hoarder and wooly accessory creator, finding the perfect gift for a knitter was a lot of fun!  I choose this gorgeous yarn holder as the perfect pick!  Click here for all the details.

Create Yarn Bowl Uncommon Goods | No Thanks to Cake

No one likes when your yarn rolls around the room as it unravels, and this bowl makes sure that doesn’t happen!  With the hand crafted detail, the yarn feeds perfectly to create whatever you’re making!  LOVE THIS!

For Your Favorite Wine Connoisseur

How cute is this dish towel?  It’s full of fun facts about everyone’s favorite grape-based beverage.  Click here for all the details.

Truth be told, I have a thing for cute tea towels, so this towel was not only fun to add to my collection, but also educational!  It even has a list of which wine glass you should use for which kind of wine!

For Your Earthy, Yoga Loving Friend

Just so you know, I’m this friend.  I love this gift as a pampering potion that had healing qualities!  Click here for the details.

Chakra Bath Salts Uncommon Goods | No Thanks to Cake

I just love the idea of using deliciously scented salts to heal my body and balance my chakras.  Next time I feel unbalanced, I know what I’m reaching for… and note that the inside has guidance on how to use them!  Scents like lavender, rosemary, and eucalyptus… all ready to heal you!

For Your Friend Who Fancies Cheese

Remember that I mentioned that this site has unique gifts?  Well, check out this one

Cheese Keeper Uncommon Goods | No Thanks to Cake

How does this thing work?  Per the website, “Simply place the white, earthenware keeper along with any hard or soft cheese in an airtight container (including plastic wrap). The food-safe clay has been fired at low temperatures, which gives it the ability to regulate the moisture around it, keeping your Romano from drying out or your Cheddar from getting mushy.”  I can’t wait to try this out!

This box of goodies was so fun to review, and there are so many other fun gifts you should check out.  I may have also picked up a few gifts for friends to enjoy too… but they’ll have to wait for Christmas before I reveal what they’re getting.

Who’s the hardest person to buy for on your holiday gift list?

Note:  Uncommon Goods provided me with products in exchange for this review.  However, thoughts and opinions are my own and do not necessarily reflect those of the brand.

Currently: October

It’s that time of the month already!  Time for my monthly wrap up… I changed it up a little this month, sharing some new things I’ve never talked about in “currently.”  Enjoy!

Currently October | No Thanks to Cake
Current Netflix Binge:

I’ve broken down and joined Netflix.  Yes, the girl who barely watches any television has subscribed to Netflix, for one reason, two words:  GILMORE GIRLS.

Gilmore Girls | No Thanks to Cake

I never watched this show when it was on TV.  However, one extra wintry winter a few years back, I watched the entire series.  And, in watching it, I completely fell in love with Rory and Loralei.  My friend Erin said it well… If only we could be as witty as Loralei one day…

Seriously, if you’ve never watched this series, it’s time… and the entire series is available on Netflix!  Let me know what you think of Stars Hollow, will ya?

Current Confession:

So, I haven’t really talked about it on social media… and I hate to talk about it with my friends because it’s a total downer, but my car accident last month kicked my arse.  I’ve been on the couch for a whole month… watching Gilmore Girls.  Rotating ice packs (aka bags of corn and edamame) with heat compresses… and planning to take over the world when this damn thing heals.

Now, I’m only sharing this with you now because I’m feeling SO MUCH BETTER four weeks later!  Finally!!!

yay | No Thanks to CakeI’m not 100% and I’m still afraid to carry much… but gosh, not being miserable when I wake up is heavenly!!!  For all of you who have chronic back pain, I am SO SORRY!  For all of those who have listened to me whine, THANK YOU!!!!  I owe you REAL wine!

Current Craft:

I’ve had my eye on a little capelet from Ravelry forever… And, during my fabulous couchtime and while watching Rory’s first days at Chilton… I made it!  I totally want to make another!  Maybe in a charcoal or mustard color.  What do you think??  I’m in love!

Capelet | No Thanks to Cake

This makes me excited to knit additional wooly fall/winter things!

Current Book:

This month, I’m not pointing out a work of fiction… instead, the most beautiful cookbook I’ve laid eyes on in YEARS!

SkinnyTaste Cookbook | No Thanks to Cake

The Skinnytaste Cookbook was released in late September, and I was BEYOND excited to receive my copies.  Gina‘s cookbook is LOADED with calories that are “light on calories, big on flavor.”  I recently made her Skinny Chicken Parmesan and it was phenomenal…

Chicken Parmesan Skinnytaste | No Thanks to Cake

I am in LOVE with all of Gina’s recipes… both those on her blog and these new creations that are part of her cookbook.  Order yours here… it’s amazing, I promise!

Current Hairstyle:

I’m still pretty obsessed with how easy it is to curl my hair everyday for work… I mentioned it last month, but wow, it’s so easy!

How to Curl Long Hair | No Thanks to Cake

And, I have yet to burn myself… {Knocking on wood.}

Current Memorable Moment:

At the beginning of the month, I got to participate in my very first engagement!  My friends Alex and Tiffany made it official… and Alex wanted to have Tiff’s closest friends involved in the action.  I was honored to be a part of it, and had trouble keeping a dry eye during the actual proposal.

The Proposal | No Thanks to Cake

And, of course, she said YES!!!  Congrats, Alex and Tiffany!

Current Outfit:

It’s not REALLY an outfit, but wow, it’s the cutest coat on the planet from New York and Company.  Half coat, half cape… yep, I BIG-PUFFY-HEART love it!

Hooray for coupons!! For more detail, click here.

Current Flavor Inspiration:

As part of Tiffany’s engagement extravaganza, we had brunch at a little Denver restaurant called Jimmy’s Urban Bar & Grill.  I’m not huge on brunch,  but considering the special occasion, I decided to try something new that I had never had… and to just jump in.

Chicken and Waffles | No Thanks to Cake

Hello, Chicken and Waffles.  I can’t wait to come up with a healthier version of this.  There has to be one.  I’ll create it, and I’ll share it… I’m still having dreams about this stuff.  It was that good… must recreate.

Current Crazy Thing I’ve Done:

I been Christmas shopping all year long.  When I was in California at the wineries with Crystal, I picked up a few things.  I pre-ordered one of my favorite bloggers’ new books, and I even picked up a few fun things in Savannah during Fitbloggin!  All these items have been hanging out in my guest room, but it was time to get them on the road.

Christmas Presents | No Thanks to Cake

I’m far from done Christmas shopping… I still need things for my niece and nephew, my brother, and my stepdad, but this first box is progress.  I did feel pretty nuts wrapping packages in October though…

Current Location:

I’m here (in paradise).  And, it’s my sister-in-law Beth’s 40th birthday tomorrow… Have a fabulous weekend, y’all!

It’s that time of the month again!  Let’s catch up on what’s going on “Currently”…

Currently: May | No Thanks to Cake

Current Book:

I’ve been busy reading Cameron Diaz’s Body Book this month, while walking on the treadmill.  I’m not quite done with it, and I’ve learned a LOT from reading it.  It’s really  a “real-talk” approach to how to optimize your health.  Not a lot of gimmicky ideas and mostly just good ideas for taking good care of yourself!  If this sounds like your kind of book, I definitely recommend it!

I’m SUPER-EXCITED about the new Emily Giffin book that came out this week, and it will be the book that I’m reading next.  And, when I say that I’ll read it… I mean that I’ll devour it this holiday weekend.  It’s on!

Current Music:

I’m participating in a contest where I had to pick a song that represented me in the contest.  I know you’re shocked to hear I picked this one…

It’s a classic… my anthem… my running music… and my ringback tone when you call me.  Fitting!

Current Guilty Pleasure:

OMG… This one was EASY to answer this month.  I recently was contacted by… a cookie company, asking if I wanted to try their cookies.  And, of course, I said yes.

Klara's Gourmet Cookies | No Thanks to Cake

Klara’s Gourmet Cookies reeled me in with a promise of sending me some samples of their award-winning macaroon cookies.  I adore these coconut cookies… so I knew I wanted to try them!  What I didn’t expect was to get the motherload of cookies in the mail!  Check out all this tasty goodness!!!  Thanks, Klara’s!!

Klara's Gourmet Cookies | No Thanks to Cake

As a girl trying to keep an eye on my waistline, these cookies have been my guilty pleasure this month.  Rationing and portioning sweet treats is not my forte.  So, I have been sharing them with friends.  So far, I’ve tried the Chocolate Chip and Sea Salt Shortbread (OMG!), the Lemon Poppy Seed Shortbread (Delish!), and the Ginger Shortbread (Such spicy goodness!)  I’m taking the macaroons to work to share with work friends, and so I don’t eat them all!  If you’re looking to send a gift of tasty cookies or to try a new brand, I definitely recommend these delicious treats!!!

Current Nail Color:

I’m still rocking the Taupeless Beach by OPI… it is just perfect right now for me.  Loving it!

OPI Taupeless Beach | No Thanks to Cake

Current Drink:

Most days, I only drink water.  In the interest of sharing something a little more interesting than that for you guys, I’ve found a new wine!

Savignon Blanc | No Thanks to Cake

I’ve been a red wine drinker for YEARS, but I’ve just recently started exploring more and more white wines… and I think it’s going to be my summer drink!  There’s something lovely and refreshing about a glass of Savignon Blanc on a warm Colorado day while sitting on a patio.  Yep, that’s where you’ll find me this summer!

Current Food:

Avocado… Not because I’m eating a lot of it.  But instead because I’m trying to figure out what recipe I want to use for the Fitbloggin California Avocado Cutting Edge Culinary recipe contest that’s coming up!  I have a few ideas to play with… it’s going to be a weekend of experimentation… I can feel it!  Wish me luck!!

BLT Summer Rolls with Lime Sriracha Dipping Sauce | No Thanks to Cake

Current Favorite Show:

Grey’s Anatomy… Oh my.  Did you guys watch this week’s episode?  We’ve all known it has been coming… the official goodbye for Dr. Cristina Yang.  Cristina and Meredith Grey represent a tremendously iconic friendship… one that I’ve watched for years.  Watching Cristina walk away from “her person” and watching them dance it out one last time was just beautiful.

I feel so lucky to have strong, inspirational, and supportive women like this in my life. Never ever underestimate the power and strength that comes with having and being a good friend.  This is what makes us human, and creates that human experience we all dream of….

Current Outfit:

I’d say this was my favorite look this month.  A cute little polka dotted fit and flare number I found at JCPenney last month.  Totally on sale and with a coupon, I’m so glad this little frock made its way home with me.  PS… It has pockets!

Current Bane of My Existence:

Gray hair.  Yes… you heard me.  Good news for all y’all, I have an amazing colorist… and you will rarely see my grey.  But dang, this change of hair color mess is so overrated.

My dad went salt and pepper pretty early… and fascinatingly MY OLDER BROTHER has very little grey.  It’s a cruel, cruel world, I tell ya… :)

Current Online Find:

I posted this link on my Facebook page, and have since added Andrea and her blog I’mPerfectLife.net to my personal blog reader.  I’d recommend you check it out as well!

I’ve read so many posts and comments from women that are just not happy with this or that about their body.  I look at my body, and there are things I don’t love.  Extra chubby bits or places where my skin has stretched.  While I know I can change these via surgery or even laser treatments,  I don’t.  I won’t change them.  They’re part of me.  The whole me.  They tell a story.

Andrea shared this post, speaking to why she too loves her “ugly” body.  Take a read, you won’t be sorry… here’s a sneak peek.

Amazing.   Real.  Inspiring… That’s the best type of reading, if you ask me.

Current Words of Inspiration:

I’ve been reading my friend Cameron Diaz’ book on the treadmill this week.  I’m in the final section that talks about establishing and maintaining a healthy mind.  She shared these words and they just stuck with me.

Whatever You are Consistent In is What You Will Become | No Thanks to Cake

This applies to everything I am and everything I long to be.  Consistency will get me there… I know this.  Thanks, Cam!

Current Mood:

Without a doubt and without hesitation… I am HAPPY.  I’ve been trying to think of a way to express how I’ve been feeling lately, and it’s been really hard to capture in a post.  HAPPY.  Yep, I’m happy.

And… no, there’s no change that’s causing it…. just decided to do it, and voila!  Try it!

It’s SPRING!!!  It’s April!  Let’s catch up on what’s going on “Currently”…

Currently

Current Book:

I am proud to report that I finished last month’s book Summer People by Elin Hilderbrand… and LOVED it!

This month, I’ve just started reading Cameron Diaz’s Body Book.  It’s not a diet book, instead a book about living your best life in the strongest, most beautiful body possible!

Current Music:

I’m really missing new music from my girl Kelly Clarkson these days.  It’s been forever since she had a new album, and while I know that she is busy growing a baby… I’d love to have some new tunes to jam out to.  Until then, I’ve been listening to the Smoakstack Sessions, Vol. 2.

The Smoakstack Sessions Vol 2 | No Thanks to Cake

Current Nail Color:

Unfortunately, I found a new line of polish that I love this month.  I really didn’t need any new nail polish, but it was like these colors needed me!

They’re from the OPI 2014 Brazil Collection.  I’m wearing the middle color right now… and these colors are pretty much PERFECT for me!

While most days I  just eat the cheese from the package, I’ve also made it into a lightning fast caprese salad with some of the fresh tomatoes in my fridge.  Yum!!!

Current Favorite Show:

I really don’t watch that much TV… so this section is going to be a lot of repeats of the same shows.   I love what I love.  And, right now, I’m loving Parenthood…

I adore all of these characters so much.   A few of my favorites… Amber, Sara and Hank, and of course, Mr. Knight… Welcome to the show!  The season finale was this week and I still haven’t watched it.  I’m really resisting the end of the season…

Current Outfit:

Shoes.  Shoes have been my obsessions… and it seems like the stores are just full of the cutest shoes right now!

Shoes | No Thanks to Cake

From Target (Clearance!)to Nordstrom Rack, to DSW… I’ve found a lot of cute finds over the past month!  Can’t wait for summer!!

Current Wish List:

I’ve been experimenting with some new wall covering for my kitchen this month.  I bought a few samples and I’m getting closer to the final product.  FYI:  I’m going with the middle grey color.

Vinyl | No Thanks to Cake

I just need to order this and get this installed!

Current Needs:

I’m working on a craft project with a deadline… I need to get this done!  Will keep you posted… it’s for a reader, so I’ll have to tell you more about it later! :)

Current Online Obsession:

Still Sole Society… it goes along with this whole shoe thing I have going this month.  If you haven’t tried it yet, it’s time.

Sole Society | No Thanks to Cake

Current Inspiration:

I took a class yesterday that caught my attention.  While it was a work training, it was a Franklin Covey class that really got me thinking about how I spend my time and what’s important to me.  More to come on this…

Current Plans:

Heading into the weekend, it’s going to be a busy one!!!  I’m going to see Draft Day on Friday night.  A movie about the Cleveland Browns, starring Kevin Costner??  Yes, please…

Draft Day | No Thanks to Cake

Seriously, does this man age???  I’ve got brunch plans on Saturday, plans with friends on Saturday night… and then Sunday is Easter.  It’s going to be a busy one, to say the least!!!
