Moving Forward

Let me tell you a little bit about Friday for me…

I woke up, and knew I hadn’t yet scheduled a post to publish, but I knew I had written a whammy of a post in my drafts.

I logged on and re-read what I had written… and it seemed right.  I knew it was exactly what I wanted to say.  And then I did the hardest part…

I hit the “Publish” button…

And then, I sat and waited… and wondered.  Had I said too much?  Were my readers going to be disappointed?  Would anyone even notice this post?

Moments later… the outpouring of responses began.  Immediately after reading Monica‘s comment, I knew that I had done the right thing.  I had written just enough… and no one was disappointed, alarmed, or anything but supportive.

Throughout the day, you guys continued to lift me up and make sure that I knew that it was ok… and that my virtual team would be supporting me all the way.

The other thing that I heard loud and clear was that I wasn’t the only one who this had happened to this year.  And, there’s something tremendously comforting in knowing that you’re not alone.  Now, don’t get me wrong… I don’t wish weight gain on ANY of you, but it’s nice to know I’m not the only one in this predicament.

Now, after I exhaled and read your comments… I knew what needed to be done.  And, here’s what it looked like…

First stop, YOGA.  Since I had Friday off, I knew I wanted to spend some time on my mat.

It had been a few weeks since I’d practiced, and it felt amazing.  Shelly’s class was the perfect amount of challenge and peaceful breathing.  It was JUST what the doctor ordered.  It reminded me of why I practice and why I love yoga… my body LOVES it.

Next, I hit up the grocery store.  I had a pretty empty fridge at my place.  Having spent the week in Virginia, I cleaned out all the produce before I left.  I had a blank slate to work with… and knew I needed the rainbow to help get me back on track.

Vegetable Shopping | No Thanks to Cake

I went for what was on sale… and Sprouts thankfully had a lot of options to choose from.  I had also found two recipes that I wanted to make over the weekend, and bought the ingredients I would need to make them happen.

I even went to two other grocery stores to make sure I had everything I needed… that’s dedication!

I logged back into MyFitnessPal.  Wow, there were like cobwebs on my profile… but I began tracking everything I was eating and plan on doing this moving forward.

This Veggie Delite from Subway was the first item to hit my food diary… and I’ve been logging ever since!

By the way… If you use MyFitnessPal, I’d love to link up.  Click here to add me as a friend.  I’m NoThanksToCake, of course.

I jumped on Instagram and started hashtagging to track progress.  I’m a HUGE fan of Instagram.  It’s just so fun to post pictures of things I encounter throughout the day and it’s a GREAT accountability tool!

I tracked all that was going on… and I’m going to continue to do so.  I’d love to have you guys follow me by clicking here.

I’ve also been using #backontrack to tag all my pics associated with getting back on track. Feel free to use it too!  I’d love to see how you’re getting back on track with me!  What a great way for all of us to link up and share ideas!

For the past three days, I’ve worked out, I’ve eaten well (with deliciously healthy beautiful food!) and I’ve tracked all that’s been going in…

I know confidently that these fifteen pounds are TOAST!

I can’t thank you enough for all of your support last week and into the weekend.  I’m incredibly excited to start this next phase of my journey with you guys by my side.  xoxo

How did you use your weekend to get back on track?

Lemon Orzo Salad with Chicken

This week has been a HARD week for eating.  HARD week.  Lots of mindless eating.  You know, where you eat first… think about it later.  Ugh.  The good news is that I don’t keep much in my house that could cause much damage, and I’ve taken most of the snacky food to the office by now.

Confession:  I haven’t even tracked my food this week.  Seriously.  Tracking my food is what I do!  Interestingly, having so many of you connect with my on MyFitnessPal after my post yesterday has been motivating.  I feel like I need to step it up for you guys (and for me) so I’m finally back to tracking!  THANK YOU!

I have my weigh-in tomorrow morning, and we’ll see how that goes.  I think I’ve only had one gain on the books.  Gain #2 may be ahead of us… just a warning.

Ok, it’s time to share this amazing recipe!  My fellow blogger Lynne over at LGSmash posted last week on Twitter that she made a super-yummy orzo salad and shared the link.  That’s all it took for me to save it and vow to make it.  WOW, this one was good.

Lemon Orzo Salad with Chicken

From Oatmeal in My Bowl

Serves 4

1 cup uncooked orzo
1/4 teaspoon grated lemon rind
4 tablespoons fresh lemon juice, to taste
1 tablespoon extra-virgin olive oil
1/2 teaspoon kosher salt
1/2 teaspoon minced garlic
1/4 teaspoon honey
1/8 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
1 cup shredded skinless, boneless chicken breast
1 cup diced cucumber
1 cup diced red bell pepper
1/3 cup diced red onion
1 1/2 teaspoon dried dill
1/2 – 3/4 cup crumbled goat cheese (optional)
1/2 teaspoon chopped fresh parsley (optional)

1.  Cook orzo according to basic directions (above). Drain and rinse with cold water; drain and place in a large bowl.  Cook chicken and shred.

2.  Chop your veggies and toss them in a bowl.  Note:  I doubled the veggies (as indicated above) as a way to volumize the recipe a little bit.

The original recipe called for 1/2 cup red pepper. I added a full cup!

The original recipe called for green onions… I swapped those out for red.

Doesn’t this veggie combo look delish? I also added a little extra chopped garlic cloves.

3.  While orzo cooks, combine lemon rind and next 6 ingredients (through black pepper), stirring well with a whisk.

4.  Drizzle juice mixture over orzo; toss to coat. Add chicken and next 4 ingredients (through dill); toss gently to combine.

5.  Plate. Sprinkle with cheese and chopped parsley. Serve.  Note:  I didn’t have goat cheese, but I sprinkled it with a little fresh grated parmesan cheese and dried parsley flakes.

Also, I made this dish the night before and ate it as a cold dish.  Absolutely delicious!  Enjoy!

Apps I Can’t Live Without

It’s the most personal item anyone has these days, so it’s important that you love it.

Most people will go home for this before they go home for their wallet, to shut off lights, or because they forgot their lunch.

Is your phone your most prized possession?

I work in the wireless industry, so I always have a fairly new device.  Also, despite working in wireless, I’m not incredibly tech-y, but there are some things I’ve found recently  that I just can’t live without.  As a result, I decided to share a post today about all the little apps that make my life easier.

If you click on the app title below, it will link you to Google Play where you can download the app.  All apps listed below are FREE unless indicated….

Healthy Living

I’ve advocated for MyFitnessPal for some time and remain a HUGE fan of this application.  Using the site from my phone makes it SO much easier to keep up with my food intake and exercise.  Follow me on MyFitnessPal and we can encourage each other:  Nothankstocake.

I LOOOOOOVE my Fitbit and the fact that they have an Android app that links all of my steps with all of my food intake with all of my weigh-ins.  What’s not to love about this app??  By now, I’m sure all of you have purchased my favorite fitness tracker, but if you haven’t… click here to read more about it!

Saving Money

The Coupons App

Here’s why I love this one:  Picture it, you’re at Hobby Lobby.  You decide to purchase a random package of Christmas ornaments in July.  You wish they were on sale or that you cut that silly coupon out of the paper.  Well, click on this app and there’s a coupon on your phone.  (Yes, on your phone!)  I’ve used Coupons to Hobby Lobby, New York and Company, Bed Bath and Beyond, Kohls… there’s a TON of them on there.  FREE.  Download it today!

I love a good deal, and Groupon delivers.  Having the app lets me bring up previously purchased deals (no more printing!) and buy new deals with just a few clicks!  I also have Living Social downloaded… but I don’t use it nearly as much.

Kroger (My Grocery Store App)

Your local grocery store VERY likely has an app that helps you SAVE money with in-store coupons.  For the Kroger version, you simply link the app to your savings card and any in-store coupons you pick automatically load to your card for easy use!  Safeway has a version, and I’m sure there’s others that do too!  Try it out!

Google Reader

As a blogger, you know that I spend time reading other blogs.  Afterall, I have to keep up with my blends (blogger + friends = blends.)  Once you save a blog to your “reader”, it updates you with any new posts automatically.  Every morning, I simply log in and see who’s posted.  Running off the Reese’s is usually one of my first reads of the day since she posts early.  Love this app!

Fandango is great for finding that movie time and location when you want to get together with friends!  I also love that it allows you to buy your tickets right from the app, so you don’t have to wait in line once you get to the theater.  While I listed this one as one of my faves, I sadly haven’t used it since the Aurora shooting.  That was just too close to home, I think (literally and figuratively.)  As the weather gets cooler, I’m sure I’ll be back at the movies in no time and glad to have this app!

Sirius XM

I’ve mentioned it a few times, but in case you didn’t know… I’m an ENORMOUS Cosmo Radio fan.  I absolutely love Wake up with Taylor (the FKCST is my favorite!) and Cocktails with Patrick.  I’ve also been relating more and more the the Dr. Jenn Bermann show lately as she talks a lot about eating disorders and intuitive eating.  Regardless, I keep my Sirius in my car and on my phone so that I can listen and keep up with my favorite radio personalities.  I listen to Taylor and Kenny while I get ready for work every day… and never miss the Seven Things You Need to Know Before You Go.  (Any other Lil Effers out there??)

I also keep Pandora on hand for when I’m at the office and want to listen to music.  I often create a random channel to listen to based upon my mood.  For example, I made an Otis Redding channel the other day… uh-mazing.  Free internet radio.  You need this.

After all of my Pinterest references, I think this app’s purpose is understood.  If you haven’t tried Pinterest, it’s time.  The End.

Lottery Results

Someone today talked me into trying this app out!  Since I’ll have won the $320M Powerball by the time you read this, I may not need the app much longer…. for now, it helps me find out what the winning tickets were.

This app is one of my many social media apps that I can’t live without… but Instagram is clearly my latest favorite.  If we haven’t connected yet via Instagram, you can find me by searching for Nothankstocake.  I also use Twitter, Facebook, and Evite apps to stay in touch with friends.

 Gate Guru

I love this app because it gives me a guide to the airport right at my fingertips.  Can’t remember what there is to eat for lunch on Concourse B?  You can use Gate Guru to find out.  Wondering if you should pick up Subway before you go to the airport?  Well, you should just do that… but as soon as you land in your new city, you can quickly pull up a map of the airport.  Completely easy and completely helpful for the frequent traveler.

What apps do you use often that you can’t live without?  Tell us the name of the app and what it does please…

Workout Wednesday – News from the Gym

It’s Wednesday… so I thought it was fitting to give you some workout updates….

1.  Couch to 5K is in full effect.  I have one more day of “Week One” and I’ll be moving onward to “Week Two.”  I’m also planning on raising the incline on the treadmill.  They say it’s an easier transition to outdoor running if you put it on an incline of 1.  Planning to try that tomorrow!  NINE WEEKS until my race!

2.  I’m Getting Super Strong – At my YMCA, they track all the weights you lift and all your cardio.  There’s even prize intervals once you hit different levels of working out.  They have a whole point system they use.  Pretty cool!

I got an email today from one of the trainers at the gym that I’ve now lifted

more than 100,000 lbs so far!

"We see you've been pumping da iron..."

I also spent time with one of the trainers on Friday learning about new machines and new exercises to tone up some problematic areas…. I see 200,000 lbs in my future really soon as result!

3.  FitBit is BACK – Last week on the SAME day that I had my root canal, I pulled a pair of workout pants out of the dryer to find that my FitBit was attached to them.  Now, what this means is that my favorite pedometer/life tracker went through not only the washer, but also the dryer.  You might remember that I just got a warranty replacement MAYBE three weeks ago!!

In case you were wondering, these are SO not waterproof. It was completely ruined by the spin cycle.

I got referred back to FitBit customer service via Twitter and they once again took care of me!  They’re sending me a new one!  I didn’t beg for a new one in any way… they are just really generous about it!!!

In appreciation for their goodwill and because I had been eyeing it… I pre-ordered the new Fitbit Aria Scale!  It is amazing and will replace my current WW scale.  It wirelessly updates your weight online with your FitBit tracker (which feeds into MyFitnessPal) and it measures things I’ve never measured like body fat percentage, etc.  I’m really excited about it.  Will let you know what I think of it when it arrives!

I ordered the White one, of course

Thank you once again, Fitbit.  You’ve created quite the promoter in me!

How are your workouts this week??
